In my opinion, Apple should start off by finding a way to make older Steam games (32-bit) that supported Intel Macs before running on M1 Macs and then expand from there, after that they can release both M1 native games on the Mac App Store and Steam at the same time. The Mac gaming market is small, no incentive for Apple or Steam to take it seriouslyĪpple, a multinational corporation doesn't care about PC gaming and rather focuses on mobile gaming for its easy profits Some reasons why Apple isn't working with Steam:Īpple prefers to take the entire 30%, the existence of Apple Arcade (subscription fee + 30% cut), so no reason to work with Valve If Mac gaming stays unsustainable, developers are going to continue releasing games for Windows only. There are no AA or specifically small indie teams producing games for the Apple Arcade either. Are the games on Apple Arcade/App Store the games we would like to play on the Mac? They may not be exactly the same level as PC games that the majority of gaming audiences are looking for, which is why many might not take Mac gaming seriously. It won't be able to catch up with what PC currently has, Valorant, Apex Legends, GTA V, Call of Duty: MW2, Overwatch 2, the newly released Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring, Genshin Impact, etc. M1’s been out for 2 years and we're only getting a few games a year? What about all of the older Steam games? Apple has released M1 native single-player games, but I haven’t heard anything about online multiplayer games. While Apple is taking some steps into Mac gaming, what they’re doing feels like an extremely slow process. There are also leaks about Apple's MR/VR headset and Apple's new gaming system similar to the Nintendo Switch(?). Apple introduced the Metal 3 API back in the 2022 WWDC. Apple also added a portion of IOS games from the App Store/Apple Arcade to the Mac App Store. I wish I could use my Mac as my main machine where I can casually game on it and not only use it as a computer for working on stuff, and maybe have a console or two off the side and that’s it, instead of having to switch between Mac and PC every time I want to casually play a game of Valorant.Īpple recently teamed up with a couple of developers to release AAA games (Resident Evil Village, No Man's Sky, etc) natively only on the Mac App Store. There has been posts about running Steam on Mac, having to use a Virtual Machine to run Windows games on Mac, buying games on the Mac App Store means you can only play those games on a Mac unlike Steam as pointed out by a recent post on here, etc.

Since the introduction of the Apple Silicon chips, the majority of Steam games (Tf2, L4d2, Portal, etc) that used to run natively on Intel Macs no longer run on M1 Macs.
